Support Barakat and Celebrate Great Design at this Year’s “Five Under Forty” Awards

On September 11, New England Home magazine will host its annual 5 Under 40 Awards night to honor the most promising emerging talent in New England residential design. Each of the five award winners has the opportunity to design a one-of-a-kind custom rug, which will be produced by the event’s sponsor, Landry and Arcari Oriental Rugs and Carpeting, and auctioned off at the Awards celebration. We are honored that Landry and Arcari, a long-time Barakat supporter, has again chosen to contribute the event’s proceeds to our programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan! This year's proceeds will go toward supporting Barakat's literacy programs aimed at girls and women in Afghanistan.

The event is sure to be a great celebration for lovers of great design and great education! The evening also features great wines, appetizers and desserts! For more information and to buy tickets, visit the New England Home website.

Building Barakat Playgrounds: Run in the “Fasting 5k” on July 19

During Ramadan, Muslims around the world gather just after sundown to break each day’s long fast together. For the second year in a row, the “Fasting 5k” will honor this tradition by bringing people together in four US cities to run in support of education. Last year, the event raised $15,000 to support Barakat’s programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan – and this year, part of the proceeds from the run will help Barakat build a playground for our students in Afghanistan. Emphasizing the global importance of the right to education, the money raised from this year’s “Fasting 5k” will also support education-focused organizations in each of the cities where the event is held.

We encourage everyone in Boston, Washington, DC, Houston and New York to participate in the “Fasting 5k” – all are welcome to walk, jog or run in this exciting event! Visit the “Fasting 5k” facebook page to join the network of runners and take a look at the website to learn more about the individual city events and to register.

Stepping Forward Together for Education: Join our 7th Annual Walk for Literacy!

Dig out your walking shoes and join us on Saturday, September 27 to raise funds and awareness for Barakat’s programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Each year, our annual Walk is a great opportunity to be active, outside, in beautiful Cambridge, have fun with the Barakat community, and join in solidarity with the youth and women we serve. With a new, scenic walking route, larger fundraising goals, and a network of national partners, we know this year’s Walk will be bigger than ever before!
By participating in the Walk, you make possible our work of increasing access to basic educational rights in Afghanistan and Pakistan, especially those of girls and women. Share this event with your friends and family, and even assemble a walking team! After you register, you can set your own goals for fundraising – this way, you have the power to support many different aspects of our programming. Here are some numbers to help you dream big:
  • $60 sends 1 girl to 1 year of a literacy program
  • $250 helps 1 girl to 1 year of high school
  • $500 sends 25 children to 1 year of elementary school
  • $1,500 will send 6 girls to 1 year of high school (tuition, uniform & school supplies)
Our target this year is to involve 500 walkers and raise $50,000. Your fundraising efforts, no matter how large or small, combine with those of our other walkers to help us reach this greater goal! Together, we can help our students in Afghanistan and Pakistan access the quality education they need to fully engage in their communities as humans and citizens.
Visit barakatworld.org/walk to register as an individual or a team, view the new walking route, and set up your own personal fundraising website. We look forward to seeing you in September!
